Homemade Chicken Nuggets with My Mini Deep Fryer

August 22, 2025

So the other day I was at Marshall’s and found this mini electric deep fryer by Lumme for only $25. It was honestly too cute to pass up, and I had to grab it. It’s small, but perfect for little batches of food — especially if you don’t want to heat up a big pot of oil.

Naturally, the first thing I decided to make with it was chicken nuggets.

I kept it simple:

  • Took about 1.5 lbs of chicken breast and cut them into bite-sized cubes.
  • Let the chicken soak in buttermilk for a bit (this helps tenderize it).
  • Coated them in seasoned flour.

That’s it — super basic. I tossed them into the fryer in small batches, and surprisingly, filling up the fryer just once was enough oil to cook all of them. Since it’s a mini fryer, it still took a little time, but honestly, the whole thing was done in about 30 minutes start to finish.

One thing I noticed — I actually found it easier to leave the lid open while frying. Condensation started building up on the lid, and I didn’t want water dripping back down into the hot oil. Leaving it open felt safer and kept things crispier, too.

Now, full honesty here… I wasn’t in love with my recipe. The nuggets tasted okay, but I definitely had to dip mine in ranch to really enjoy them. My son, on the other hand, loved them, and honestly that’s all that matters to me. Bonus points — I had enough nuggets for three people plus extra to pack in his lunch the next day.

Obsessed or Unimpressed?

So, am I obsessed or unimpressed with my little Lumme fryer? Honestly… obsessed, but with a couple notes. Even though my first recipe wasn’t amazing, the fryer itself worked great. It’s cute, easy to use, didn’t take forever, and clean-up wasn’t bad at all.

The only downside? You can’t take the middle part of the fryer out for easy dumping/cleaning, which some fryers do offer. Not a dealbreaker for me, but definitely something to keep in mind if easy cleanup is a big factor for you.

Overall though, for $25, I can’t complain. I’ll definitely be experimenting with more recipes in this thing.

Stay tuned — I might just come up with a homemade nugget that beats fast food!
