Switching from iPhone 14 Pro to the Z Flip 7: My Honest Thoughts After a Week

July 30, 2025

I’ve been using the Samsung Z Flip 7 for about a week now after switching from my iPhone 14 Pro—and I have a lot of thoughts.

This isn’t some deep tech breakdown. It’s just my real-life experience: the good, the bad, and the “why can’t this phone do that?” moments.

📲 The Switch Itself

Switching from iPhone to Samsung was exciting but kind of annoying at the same time. I used Samsung’s Smart Switch to transfer everything over, but honestly, not everything worked smoothly. Some apps wouldn’t work right until I uninstalled and reinstalled them. And my saved passwords? Didn’t transfer at all. That was frustrating because I use a lot of apps and websites daily.

🎨 Customization

One of the biggest reasons I wanted to try the Z Flip 7 was for more control over how my phone looks and works—and Samsung definitely delivers here.

  • I discovered the Good Lock app with Wonderland, which lets you add touch animations when you move your fingers across the screen. It’s so fun!
  • You can set videos as your lock screen and even set your wallpaper to change when you plug your phone in to charge. iPhone just started doing that too, but Samsung lets you use animated videos, which makes it even cooler.
  • You can even make your own app icons, which I love. I made custom Stitch and Toothless icons, and they are SO cute.
  • You can also change your keyboard theme, and even download new ones to match your vibe or mood for the day.

BUT—not everything is perfect.

You can react to texts in Google Messages, just like in iMessage (with a heart, thumbs up, etc.), but you can’t add a fun sticker to someone else’s message like you can on iPhone. And I actually miss those—they were just a fun way to respond and personalize a conversation.

Also, while I did figure out how to set a custom ringtone for messages (yay!), I learned something else frustrating: you can’t switch between Samsung Messages and Google Messages without breaking things. Google basically forces you to stick with theirs. And that kind of pisses me off—it’s restrictive, and honestly makes me like Google less.

Still, I’m using Google Messages anyway because—just like iMessage—it lets you text from your PC, which is super handy for me since I use a gaming PC with Google and Microsoft products. So while I have mixed feelings about it, it’s still convenient.

💬 Scheduled Texts (or Lack of Them)

One thing I really miss is the ability to schedule daily recurring messages. On my iPhone, I had a text that went out every morning to my son saying “I love you.” I can’t do that on the Z Flip 7, and that honestly sucks. It’s such a small but meaningful thing that iPhone handles better.

📷 Camera Talk

Both the iPhone 14 Pro and Z Flip 7 have the same megapixel cameras, but they don’t perform the same. Samsung relies more on AI. It’s not bad, but sometimes it goes too far—especially when there’s text or signage in the background. The iPhone keeps things more natural and clearer in those moments.

📱 That Foldable Life

I love the fold. Closing the phone to end a call or just stick it in my pocket feels good. I wanted something more compact and less distracting, and this design really helps me stay off my phone more. I’ve actually noticed I’m being more present in real life.

The cover screen is cute and useful too. You can check texts, music, weather, and more without opening the phone. I just wish Samsung let you use more apps on it natively. You can download a third-party app to run TikTok and stuff on it, but Motorola’s Razr handles that better straight out of the box.

💼 Work Compatibility & Cases

I still use my iPhone for work because the CCC One app doesn’t work well on Samsung. That’s really the only thing tying me to it right now. Also—accessory availability is something to think about. iPhones definitely have more case options. For the Z Flip, you’re a little more limited, which can be a bummer if you like to switch up your style often.

🧠 Final Thoughts

Honestly? There are pros and cons to both phones.

I truly wish Apple and Samsung would team up and build the perfect device because they both bring great things to the table. Apple is better at how everything connects and works together, but Samsung nails customization and creativity.

Switching has taught me that you don’t have to be tied to one brand or phone forever. Get the phone that fits your needs right now. You can always switch back, upgrade later, or try something new. Phones are expensive—but saving up, getting unlocked models, and not being tied to a carrier is totally worth it. Freedom is underrated.

Right now, the Z Flip 7 is my main phone—and I’m loving it. But I still use my iPhone, and that’s okay too. You can use both. You don’t have to pick a side. Do what works best for you.
